Data Centre

Unlike many of our competitors, we don't operate our own data centres.

Why not?
Well, it's because this enables us to provide our customers with the very best housing for their servers.

Let us explain further…

Why do we operate this way?

In short, we're free agents! And this gives us a real edge that helps us serve you, the customer, better. We are able to pick and choose the very best data centres in the country and place our customers’ servers there. We don't have a vested interest in placing you in a data centre that may not be as good, or up to the same standard, simply because we have invested in it. Many of our competitors who promote the fact that they own their data centre find themselves in this situation. You'll be placed in their data centre, as that makes financial sense to them. Not because it's the best place to house your server. This is the Storm difference. We pick the best and place you with the best. Don't believe us, ask our competitors who own their DC exactly what "tier" their data centre is. You'll likely find it's tier 2 or below and many don't actually have an official “tiering” classification.

So tell me more about why Storm's data centres are so special?

We pick and choose the best ISO-accredited data centres in the UK, those who specialise in building and managing data centres to the highest of standards. We choose our data centres very carefully, based on their security accreditations and financial stability, ultimately which we feel are better for our clients’ business. We work strategically with industry leaders and build best in class solutions which we then monitor end-to-end 24/7/365.

We strongly believe our data centres are the best in the UK, combined with our expertise of managing environments for Windows and Linux hosting, we offer state of art business class hosting solutions, backed by our outstanding support. At the centre of these solutions is the Data Centre facility that is operated by Iomart, who have recently received Tier 4 classification and are both public sector network (PSN) and N3 compliant.
We are very proud of the data centres that house our infrastructure and enjoy taking our clients and prospects on tours of the data centres, so they can see everything that they offer, including:

  • Security cameras
  • 24/7/365 staffing (both technical and security)
  • Biometric access
  • Resilient power
  • More than enough bandwidth coming in and going out
  • Carrier-neutral high speed connections to the internet

These features combined, allow us to give our clients the benefit of a 100% network uptime guarantee as well as an industry leading 30 minute hardware replacement SLA. Not owning our data centres means we are able to choose the best data centres in the country, we are able to provide world class service for our clients and maintain equipment at multiple facilities in order to ensure redundancy for potential disaster recovery situations. As we expand, we will move into more world class data centres, and we will always have more options, since we do not have to maintain our own data centres.

We ensure that the data centres we use have their certifications and audits, and we are always making sure that this is the best place possible to house our hosting infrastructure. By having someone else worry about the physical structure, we can focus our energy on being a superior managed hosting provider.

Security

We've gone to great lengths to establish multiple security measures to protect the hardware that houses your information. These measures have been put in place to prevent both unauthorised physical and digital access.

Physical Measures

  • Dual palisade steel fencing
  • Anti-tailgating vehicle entry technology
  • Experienced 24/7 on-site security personnel
  • Motion detectors
  • Internal and external HD CCTV
  • Physical access control and surveillance

Digital Measures

  • ISO 9001, 14001 and 27001 audited and certified
  • Stringent hardware firewall protection
  • Proprietary digital security protocols and techniques
  • Intelligent DDos protection

High-speed network

Our data centres are built on a redundant network infrastructure. We've partnered with over 30 top-tier carriers and ISPs to deliver one of the fastest and most connected networks in the UK. Multi-carrier connectivity provides network and service independence, providing our customers with carrier neutrality and the assurance of 100% service availability.

Resilient power infrastructure

In the almost impossible event of both suppliers experiencing an interruption, a robust uninterrupted power supply (UPS) infrastructure engages to provide power to our servers. Storm Internet operates two 500kvA UPSs in an N+1 configuration for added redundancy. Two 1MW diesel generators are on permanent standby to sustain power should both Grid connections and UPSs fail.

Environment-friendly power supply

With data centres currently contributing roughly 5% of the UK's energy usage, cutting down IT's energy footprint has become a key priority. Our data centres conform to the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and infrastructure management (DCiM) benchmarks to make better use of supplied power. Where possible we make use renewable energy to further minimise our impact on the environment.
