Enviromental Responsibility

It is estimated that data centres contribute around 5% to the EU’s total energy usage. We engage with our data centre partners on a regular basis to review their renewable energy policies and their attitude towards carbon reduction, whilst actively working with our hardware suppliers to source the latest and most energy-efficient technologies.

  • We're a 100% Green UK-based hosting company
  • 100% of Storm's UK-based servers are powered by renewable energy sources
  • We actively offset more CO2 than we produce
  • 9 times winner at the UK Internet Industry Awards (ISPAs)!

Green Data Centre

Our data centres are certified to ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) standards and are committed to developing carbon neutral hosting facilities. They actively invest in green initiatives and liaise with their own suppliers to identify where new efficiencies can be created. Some of the measures that have been employed as part of their strategies include:

  • Ensuring that they only use energy from renewable sources. This can carry a slight price premium over power sourced from fossil fuels, but can contribute significantly to carbon reduction efforts.
  • Our network engineers utilise industry best practices when setting up racks and routing cables. Poorly configured rack configurations can reduce airflow, which requires more energy spent on cooling.
  • Cold aisle containment has reduced the operating temperature of the air handling units by 3 degrees. As a result an annual energy saving of around 300,000 kWh has been realised.

Energy Efficient Servers

Over the years Dell has made significant strides in developing energy-efficient servers that are better for the environment. Storm uses the latest Dell PowerEdge servers that deliver the ultimate in efficiency and reliability. Our standard server configurations deliver green hosting through:

  • Low voltage, high efficiency processors that deliver superior processing power
  • High-efficiency power supplies designed to draw power only when required
  • Smart sensors that activate server fans only when necessary

Our Green Policies

Our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint aren’t simply focused on the services that we offer. We also have measures in place in our office to improve our working practises and usage of particular materials. These include:

  • Cutting down on internal paper usage. Where paper is used, we follow a strict recycling protocol
  • We use energy-saving light bulbs throughout the Storm Internet premises
  • All customer invoices, specs and receipts are sent out in electronic format.
  • We use modern low-power PCs that provide the same energy-saving features as our servers

22 Trees

With Storm’s 22 Trees campaign, we’ve partnered up with more:trees to plant two trees for every public cloud virtual server. Customers help us combat global warming without spending a penny, and get a certificate as proof that somewhere out there, two trees (per virtual server) are absorbing CO2 emissions on their behalf.

  • Calculations are based on 11 virtual servers per physical server
  • One tree absorbs roughly 21kg to 35kg of CO2 per year
  • Extracted CO2 is converted to oxygen and plant matter through photosynthesis

100% Green Company

We proactively monitor our CO2 emissions and adjust our tree planting activities to offset more emissions than we produce. When you purchase a hosting solution or server from us you can be confident that you too are investing in the environment and a greener future for all.

Giving Something Back

Storm Internet’s philosophy is borne out of its business ethos of improving the lives of others by giving people and businesses the technology and tools they need to accomplish their goals. Founded in Oxford over 10 years ago, we’ve always believed in both business and personal development. We therefore seek to support our own staff members in their charitable pursuits and personal growth, as well as giving something back to our community. As a business we are in a fortunate position to be able to support local charities and community groups with a view to cultivating more future success stories.
