Storm Internet is committed to the environment and reducing our carbon footprint by providing green hosting through a variety of different methods. As well as engaging with our partners to identify methods that we can implement to help protect the environment, we are also active in developing our own methods to provide customers with carbon neutral web hosting solutions.
Green Data Centre
Storm Internet's servers are hosted at the BlueSquare Data Centre, one of the UK's greenest data centres. The sheer nature of a data centre means that it uses up large amounts of energy, in-turn meaning that a wide array of measures need to be taken to help offset the carbon usage. BlueSquare proactively tackle this with a variety of measures to make its data centre locations significantly more energy efficient. These measures include:
- Offsetting carbon emissions through tree planting
- Deploying efficient cooling systems that output 3Kw (kilowatts) of cooling energy for every 1Kw of electrical energy used
- Having the latest evaporation cooling systems integrated into existing structures, with such systems using up to 75% less energy than their traditional counterparts
- Using a "free air cooling" system which uses external air to cool the air that is extracted from the data floors if the outside temperature is low enough. Withdrawing the need for chillers to power up and chill the air that has been extracted

Energy Efficient Servers
We use the latest Dell PowerEdge servers which provide the ultimate in efficiency and reliability whilst reducing their need for power. Dell have made significant steps in creating more environmentally friendly servers that now consume much less power than previous models. Our standard server configurations now consist of the following energy saving features that help ensure our hosting solutions are as green as possible:
- Low voltage, high efficiency processors use low amounts of energy whilst maximising the level of power that is offered
- High efficiency power supplies are designed to draw power only when it is required and will reduce overall energy wastage rates
- Smart sensors control the power of server fans to ensure that they only provide cooling when required.

Our Green Policies
Our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint aren't simply focussed on the services that we offer. We also have measures in place in our office to improve our working practises and usage of particular materials. These include: -
- Recycling all unneeded paper
- Use of energy saving light bulbs throughout the workplace
- Operating a completely paperless system with all customer invoices, specs and receipts sent out in electronic format
- Using modern, low-power PCs throughout the office that use similar technologies to what we deploy in our servers
In addition, we are an active partner of Carbon Managers and have made a commitment to planting one new tree every month under the Trees 4 Business campaign. This offsets our remaining carbon usage by over 400%. We proactively monitor our CO2 usage and adjust our tree planting activities in order to compensate any increase.
