Research carried out by Conlumino on behalf of Barclays suggests that By 2024 UK consumers will be spending £53.6 billion per year via their smartphones and tablets, this is a huge increase on the £9.7 billion being spent today. Although 70% of retailers do not have a mobile-enabled website or a mobile app yet.

These results suggest that the retail sector will be moving to mobile extremely quickly and Barclays have predicted that by 2024, 42.4% of all retail sales in the UK will involve a mobile device at some point during the purchase decision process. With the increased use of smartphones and tablets, it’s of no surprise that over 46% of retailers are claiming sales generated via mobile devices.

With 70% of retailers not offering mobile friendly websites or apps, less than a third when asked said they had a clear plan of action for investment in mobile. Both B2B and B2C customer expectations are high, requiring a consistent level of service and flexibility. The easiest way to drive sales is to make the shopping process as simple as possible for the customer by engaging them through the platform of their choice. Creating a responsive experience doesn’t just mean placing your business on a responsive website design though. It’s important to have a mobile marketing strategy in place which integrates with your other marketing strategies to help grow your business. It also needs to manage your customer journey, tracking interactions and reflect your buying experience, bringing together your telephone and in store sales, marketing, promotions, order history, CRM, delivery details etc.

Google has recently shook up its algorithms giving preferences to mobile-friendly websites, meaning if your website isn’t mobile-friendly it’s going to start ranking lower in the mobile searches too. Carlene Whitehead, Marketing Manager at Storm Internet commented, “We weren’t ready for this change in algorithm and launched our mobile site a few weeks late and we certainly saw a hit in our website traffic due to ranking lower in google. We acted quickly and optimised our website for mobile and are pleased to say we’re back up there again”.
