Google’s AMP will help load WordPress mobile sites faster | Storm Internet

Web 2.0 looks forward to outstanding internet speeds to run websites – especially when it comes to your handheld devices. That is why Google is planning to make the web faster for mobile phones. Using AMP (Accelerated mobile pages) by Google can now be supported in WordPress enabled websites to help load mobile pages faster.

AMP concept came up in February 2016 using a similar approach that is seen in Facebook’s pages featuring instant Articles. It has been stated that an AMP enabled page will be able to load a page 4 times quicker, which is quite useful for urgent viewing of content.

Automattic, the company behind WordPress, has invoked an AMP strategy of their own for helping users get faster loading on their smartphones. You will now be able to view any WordPress website faster thanks to the plugins for AMP.

Many popular WordPress websites like Fortune, TechCrunch, and Quartz have all been planning to support AMP soon. The changes are though most likely functional for newly added articles. One thing that needs to be seen is whether the old articles and stories are affected due to the AMP plugin. AMP enabled pages might improve the viewing experience for users, but complete testing is still to be seen.

How to enable it?

If you are trying to open a website that features AMP pages, then for that you will have to add “/amp/” after a URL is specified in the bar. This will take the page to an optimized look of the webpage. The page will mostly focus on the content rather than the images and other media files to give you a faster loading time for the page.

AMP has one big benefit that it will not restrict your user experience on webpages. If you need ad networks, such as AdSense, AOL, Outbrain, OpenX, DoubleClick and similar others, then you will get optimized tags for these as well. Adding tags to your AMP pages will be fully functional while the plugin is enabled hassle free. Other than this, you can add up Google Analytics tools as well. However, JavaScript will be optimized, and some functionality will be retrograded.

For the ones who run self-hosted WordPress websites, there is a customizable option for the AMP template as well. Albeit the system for customization is still being perfected for making it simple to use. Many other processes that are usually slowing down webpages are by default turned off. Some of these are – embedded codes, JavaScript calls, Flash media files, etc. Even the comment sections will be turned off by default. Users will have to enable them from the inside for viewing them.

WordPress has taken a big step to enable such phenomenal functionalities on their websites. And, with AMP pages enabled, there will certainly be optimized loading speeds. Over a quarter of the web world consists of WordPress websites and using this feature will help users save a lot of time. So, the firm has now officially announced all their websites to be enabled with AMP pages.
