Linux has been around since 1991 as an alternative to Microsoft Windows. The Operating System is predominantly known for its use in servers, although it is installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from embedded devices and mobile phones to supercomputers Linux distributions, installed on both desktop and laptop computers have become increasingly commonplace in recent years.
However it is still nowhere near as popular as Microsoft Windows. In 2007 Windows dominated the desktop and personal computer markets with around 90% of the desktop market share, and accounted for about 66% of all servers. In server revenue market share Windows achieved 36.3% and Linux achieved 12.7%.
Although Windows dominates the mass market, Linux is used to power more serious concerns. As of November 2007, Linux powered 85% of the world's most powerful supercomputers, compared to Windows' 1.4%. In February 2008, Linux powered five of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies, compared to Windows' two.
So what do the decision makers behind these supercomputers know about Linux that the rest of us perhaps don't?
The Linux platform is specifically designed to accommodate a large amount of web traffic and server load. They are also known for their capacity to host a large number of websites.
This means you have access to the code of the operating system. You can actually learn computer science, change the code and experience the result and can even participate to the development of the code.
Linux is also good for IT students. Unlike many of its non opensource competitors, Linux allows students to learn and experiment with how the system works.
Linux provides a shell environment which means they are interactive, text-based systems that allow users to custom design their services from any computer in the world. This means that because of their shell environment Linux servers provide great degree of flexibility. Unlike Windows systems, Linux cannot only be used by special remote administration programs.
