Linux Vs Windows
+ / -
Linux has been around since 1991 as an alternative to Microsoft Windows. The Operating System is predominantly known for its use in servers, although it is installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from embedded devices and mobile phones to supercomputers Linux distributions, installed on both desktop and laptop computers have become increasingly commonplace in recent years.
However it is still nowhere near as popular as Microsoft Windows. In 2007 Windows dominated the desktop and personal computer markets with around 90% of the desktop market share, and accounted for about 66% of all servers. In server revenue market share Windows achieved 36.3% and Linux achieved 12.7%.
Although Windows dominates the mass market, Linux is used to power more serious concerns. As of November 2007, Linux powered 85% of the world's most powerful supercomputers, compared to Windows' 1.4%. In February 2008, Linux powered five of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies, compared to Windows' two.
So what do the decision makers behind these supercomputers know about Linux that the rest of us perhaps don't?
The Linux platform is specifically designed to accommodate a large amount of web traffic and server load. They are also known for their capacity to host a large number of websites.
This means you have access to the code of the operating system. You can actually learn computer science, change the code and experience the result and can even participate to the development of the code.
Linux is also good for IT students. Unlike many of its non opensource competitors, Linux allows students to learn and experiment with how the system works.
Linux provides a shell environment which means they are interactive, text-based systems that allow users to custom design their services from any computer in the world. This means that because of their shell environment Linux servers provide great degree of flexibility. Unlike Windows systems, Linux cannot only be used by special remote administration programs. Linux systems can be accessed from any internet connected computer without special or expensive software.
The most popular reason that people choose Linux is because of its excellent reliability. Most Linux systems can provide above 99% uptime, whereas most Windows servers with the same amount of traffic cannot. At Storm we have first-hand experience of this, with the majority of support issues we receive coming from customers hosting their site(s) on one of our Windows Servers.
Of course, Microsoft Windows wouldn't have reached the dizzy heights of success if the platform didn't have its advantages. As it is user interface based, it makes rapid application development easy and enables developers to get things done quickly. As a result it is still the tool of choice for many IT developers.
But if you are a general webmaster who doesn't specifically need to code in Windows languages e.g. Classic ASP, ASP.NET or SQL Server then we recommend you should seriously consider choosing Linux.
What is Web Hosting?
Web hosting is a service that enables companies and individuals to have their website available on the internet. A website is 'hosted' on a server which is owned by the web hosting company. Depending on the specification of the website(s), clients can either rent server space on a shared server or can purchase a dedicated server. These servers are usually held in data centres which are either own by them, or by a company specialising in housing servers called colocation.
What is Shared Hosting?
Shared hosting refers to a service where a website is hosted on a server alongside a number of other websites. A good analogy is to imagine a server as a large chest of drawers, with each drawer containing a separate website. Shared website hosting is the most economical web hosting option as the overall cost and maintenance of the server is shared among all the sites it hosts.
What is Dedicated Server Hosting?
For those requiring a higher degree of flexibility, reliability and power from their web hosting solution, dedicated hosting is an excellent option.
With a dedicated server you have the full resources of the server at all times plus have the flexibility to configure and install custom software as you require. You are also not at the mercy of bad coding issues from other websites which could cause problems on the server.
Dedicated sever hosting customers tend to be individuals and small to medium sized businesses with in-house IT staff who require a server as a raw material so that they can configure it to suit their own needs.
What is Reseller/Multiple Domain Hosting?
Reseller hosting/multiple domain hosting is designed for web designers, developers, businesses, entrepreneurs or anyone that wishes to host more than one web site or sell web hosting space.
With Storm Internet's Reseller Hosting, you can quickly establish your own web hosting business, create your own web hosting packages and set your own prices. You can repackage our services as you wish and rebrand features such as your customer control panels with your own corporate identity and logo.
In addition, you get full control over many web hosting components and can disable and enable certain features on a domain-by-domain basis.
With Reseller web hosting, you will be provided with a certain amount of space on one of our shared servers. To maximise reliability, your space is placed within its own 'application pool' which means, that your sites are protected against any bad coding or traffic caused by other websites.
